EnableMart sponsored an educational webinar with Tom Jakobs, MS, PE and President of InvoTek Inc. Tom provides an overview and explanation of key considerations when selecting tools to help people with limited hand movement access computers tablets and other similar devices.
One clear message Tom shares is to first start with what you "can" do and what is the most normal for you, then consider multiple access methods. Tom reccommends at least two or more access methods so you don't have to rely on just one way to use technology.
“People need to be able to advocate for themselves. In order for them to be able to do those kinds of things, it’s really important that they have an efficient and socially acceptable means for connecting to the world” Tom Jakobs, President of InvoTek Inc.
This webinar touches on four main areas of interest. Here are some highlights of the four areas mentioned in the webinar and quick links to the product description pages on the EnableMart website.
Alternate Access Methods: Examples include Hand-Splint, Head Pointer, Keygaurd & Mini Keyboard.
Speech Recognition Techology: Examples include Dragon Naturally Speaking: Speech to Text & Supplemental Speech Recognition. For those who can verablly communicate, the clearer the speech the more accurate the output. Supplemental Speech Recognition is used for those with difficult to understand speech.
Head Tracking Techology: Examples include 1 Dot & 3 Dot. The 1 Dot is used with many people. It is best when used for a short duration. The cursor does not stay aligned when the head moves off screen like the 3 Dot model does.
Eye Tracking Techology: Examples include a Safe Laser System. For use, only eye movement is required, it can be fatiguing but great if the user can only use their eyes. There is a laser sensing keyboard with up to 15 overlays and up to an hour of digitized speech output.
The last 10 minutes of the webinar is a Question & Answer time. Webinar viewers brought up a variety of great questions. Tom Jakobs pointed out a program available through InvoTek called the AT Passport Program. This program offers use of the technology products for a low monthly fee to enable the user to try before purchase.
