One way that teachers have found is very helpful for using an AAC Device or picture communicator is to customize different pages and levels for different environments that the user will encounter.
You could make a level and page for different areas like the bathroom, classroom, playground, kitchen, and bedroom. Then point out the different objects as you encounter them throughout the day. Later, ask questions about what you've seen and have the students use their AACs to identify the objects you are referring to. The questions and the items you include on each level can increase in complexity as the student becomes more comfortable with the environments.
One example would be to take the students on a walk once a day. During the walk, point out different things you see like a swingset, trees, clouds, etc. When you get back to the classroom, have the different items ready on an AAC device so you can ask about what they saw. This will engage the children in the different objects and help them correlate the different items on their communicators with the objects in real life.
